Chester High School Boys basketball to host youth camp

By Dr. Jim Beers

Chester High School Head Boys Basketball Coach, Brad Norman, has announced that he, his assistant coaches and players will be hosting a youth basketball camp this summer at CHS Colbert Gymnasium.
The event will be a three-day affair beginning on May 31st and running through Friday June 2nd.  The camp is designed for boys and girls that will be entering 3rd through 8th grades next fall.
Norman said, “Our camp is for both boys and girls of any skill level.  It is our hope that kids from all three Chester elementary schools attend.  Chester Grade School, St. John and St. Mary’s athletes are all welcome.  As a matter of fact, kids from anywhere in the area are welcome.  We just want to help kids learn how to properly play basketball.”
Camp activities will be divided into three sessions per day to allow athletes of the same age to train with players their own age and skill level.  Grades 3 and 4 will train from 8:30-10:00 a.m. each day.  Grades 5 and 6 will train from 10:00 a.m. till 11:30 a.m. each day.  The daily camps will conclude with the junior high level 7th and 8th graders training from 11:30 a.m. till 1:00 p.m.
The cost for the camp is only $30.00 for the entire three-day event and includes a T-shirt.  Participants are strongly encouraged to bring or wear athletic shorts, basketball shoes and an athletic shirt.
Norman said, “The emphasis of the camp will be on developing good and proper basketball fundamentals, ball handling skills, proper shooting technique, defensive skills, and proper footwork”.
“All of the above will be taught emphasizing good manners, positive attitudes, and utilizing good respect for self and other players. Finally, we will be teaching the players the importance of being a great teammate”, said Norman.
“Norman also announced, “This year’s camp will also feature a special guest appearance by former Chester High School athlete and current Jr. NBA Coach, Jim Corrona”.
Corrona is well known world-wide as a great coach, administrator, motivator and clinician. “Coach Norman said, “Corrona is a mover.  He is one-part teacher, one part coach, one part camp and clinic speaker, one part athletic administrator and TEN parts a riveting motivator”!
Coach Corrona has produced good shooters all over America and overseas in India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Russia, Finland, Vietnam, Thailand, and Poland.  His formula for teaching and motivating had worked well for more than 40 years.
Corona’s followers claim, “Coach Corrona has traveled world-wide conducting basketball camps, and teaching the art of shooting to thousands of coaches and players, both young and old.”
Jim Corrona’s ability to teach shooting to the masses, both boys and girls, is amazing.  He also teaches players to be the “very best they can be”; not only in shooting, but in the “game of life”. This has been his driving force for a lifetime.  He teaches with passion and reinforces good overall life skills as well as basketball techniques. Coach Corrona will conduct his portion of the camp on Thursday June 1st.
Coach Norman states that there are two ways to register for the upcoming camp. First of all athletes can complete a registration form  and mail both the form and registration fee to Chester High School, 1901 Swanwick street, Chester, Illinois, 62233. Please direct this mailing to the attention of Brad Norman. Secondly, interested participants can sign up at the door on the first day of camp Wednesday May 31.
